Graphic Design The New Basics

Excerpt

This book is a guide to visual form-making, showing designers how to build richness and complexity around simple relationships. We created the first edition of this book in 2008 because we didn’t see anything quite like it for today’s students and young designers: a concise, contemporary guide to two-dimensional design. Since its release, Graphic Design: The New Basics has reached an enthusiastic audience around the world. Everywhere we go, we meet educators and young designers who have used the book and learned something from it.

Graphic Design For Architects

Excerpt

Architects describe their work through drawings, images and models. Increasingly, architects use other forms of representation to describe their ideas. Diagrams, information graphics, books, posters, websites, competition boards and digital presentations are part of an expanded vocabulary of representation techniques. While the topic of these drawings is architecture, the tools and techniques used to present them are expertise associated with graphic design. Deep disciplinary knowledge is required to produce architecture; however, additional knowledge from graphic design is necessary to present architecture.

Graphic Translation

Excerpt

Graphic translation produces drawings of instant recognition and startling visual interest. The work in this book focuses on iconic representation,    which    is    a    simplified    version    of    the    object,    with    the    visual essence of the object retained. Graphic translation is as much art as it is design. The examples portray a multitude of individual approaches to the drawing system and give the designer, educator, and student insight into learning this method of graphic drawing.

Meggs’ History of Graphic Design

Meggs’ History Of Graphic Design

Excerpt

Many different methods can be employed to investigate the evolution of graphic design, including exploring aesthetic movements and ideas, considering economic implications, analyzing audience sensibility, and evaluating the influence of technological innovations such as the invention of movable type or lithography. Naturally, the visual nature of graphic design is our primary concern, but we must also consider the values of the designers, the impact of their work on audiences, and the intrinsic meaning of forms. Traditional art history research approaches are in many ways insufficient for addressing the relatively recent and completely unique history of graphic design. Concentrating only on individual designers and their most important works or placing these designers systematically into schools or overall movements does not adequately fulfill our needs. Invigorating exchanges among designers is crucial impetus to the growth of graphic design, and, because of the Internet, this impetus is particularly relevant to graphic design today.

Design Literacy

Excerpt

Design    Literacy    was    originally    called    “Object    Lessons:    Understanding Graphic    Design,”    but    fortunately    I    was    made    to    realize    that    not    only    was this    title    too    imprecise,    it    was    too    cute.    Conversely,    Design    Literacy    was like    a    call    to    arms,    a    manifesto    of    sorts—“I    want    my    DESIGN    LITERACY!!!” (apologies    to    MTV).    Since    discourse    about    verbal,    visual,    and    cultural    literacy were    in    the    air    around    the    time    of    publication    in    1997,    and    design    literacy    was    a subset    of    that,    the    title    tapped    into    the    zeitgeist    and    continues    to    have    resonance. Arguably,    the    title    just    might    account    for    the    book’s    success.

Graphic Design Solutions

Excerpt

Since visual communication plays a key role in the appearance of almost all print, fi lm, and screen-based media, graphic designers and advertising art directors are the primary makers of the visual artifacts of our environment and popular culture. Imagine a world with no provocative posters or no thought-provoking CD covers. Imagine no choking poster or cities without wayfi nding or signage systems. And imagine the chaos of a newspaper or website that wasn’t designed by a professional graphic designer. That would be a world without graphic design.

THE	ELEMENTS OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

THE ELEMENTS OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

Excerpt

To design means to plan. The process of design is used to bring order from chaos and randomness. Order is good for readers, who can more easily make sense of an organized message. An ordered message is therefore considered good design. But looking through even a short stack of design annuals, you will see that what is judged “good” changes with time. It is apparent that style and fashion are aspects of design that cannot be ignored.

What Is Graphic Design

Excerpt

To be able to talk about the role that graphic design plays in the world of Web design, we must first understand exactly what graphic design is. Having a definition, we can begin to examine the subject in detail. So, what exactly is this thing we call “graphic design”? Katherine McCoy touches on the multi-faceted nature of the field, asking “Is graphic design an art, science, business, craft or language?” She offers no definitive answer but does formulate a simple concept of graphic design in the context of its birth

Drawing For Graphic Design

Drawing For Graphic Design

Excerpt

Drawing is a fundamental part of who I am. From a very early age, encouraged by my family (all artists of one kind or another), drawing became the activity I enjoyed most. When I decided to pursue an education in graphic design, I was fortunate to find a program in which drawing was a core focus; it helped build a foundation for conceptualiziation that still guides every project I do. As I gained professional experience, however, I came to realize that this was in marked contrast to many of my colleagues, who never picked up a pencil if they could avoid it; indeed, most had never had design-based drawing classes in school. And, when I began teaching some years ago—seeing my students consistently turn to photographic solutions for their projects—it became clear that drawing was systemically absent from the discipline of graphic design. Understanding how the profession evolved has provided some insight into the matter.
